Lea Michele Sarfati was born on August 29, 1986 in Bronx, New York to parents Edith and Marc Sarfati and raised in Tenafly, New Jersey with her Italian-American mother and Spanish father. Her excellent singing talent was apparent from an early age and at just eight years old Lea accompanied a friend to an open casting call for Les Misérables and was chosen for the role of Young Cossette. Following this, Lea won the role of Teteh’s daughter in the 1998 production of Ragtime. She then went on to play Shprintze and Chava in Fiddler on the Roof. At just fourteen Lea won the starring role in Spring Awakening and stuck with the show for almost eight years as it went from early workshops to the Great White Way.

In 2000 Lea made her television debut in Third Watch, playing a young girl involved in a car crash. The experience must of given Lea some insight into camera acting, however she continued on her Broadway path for eight more years. On May 18, 2008 Lea left Spring Awakening and went on to perform in a reading of Sheik and Sater’s new musical, Nero, in July 2008 at Vassar College. On August 8, 9 and 10, 2008, Michele portrayed Eponine in the Hollywood Bowl’s Les Misérables concert.

Lea can currently be seen in Fox’s hit show Glee where she plays the lead female singer of a high school’s glee club. Originally only commissioned for thirteen episodes, Fox has recently ordered a full twenty-two episode season and has picked the show up for a second.
